Life Savers

On Sunday, November 22, 2009, Kalusugan Coalition and Philippines Nurses Association-NY coordinated a CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) training with Philippine Forum. Held at the Bayanihan Community Center in Woodside, the training was attended by Kabalikat members-an organized group of domestic workers, many of whom are babysitters, nannies or adult caregivers who requested to be trained in infant and adult CPR to prepare them to respond to emergencies. Participants learned about the importance of calling 911, the ABCs (Airway, Breathing and Circulation), and how to clear an airway of someone choking. Staff of Philippine Forum also became certified in CPR/AED (automated external defibrillator) since the community center receives heavy traffic from community members. The training was conducted by Leonila Mariazeta, Lolita Compas, and Vernie Bacolot of PNA-NY. Kalusugan Coalition and PNA-NY hope to continue providing similar trainings to community groups in the future.
